Aldridge, John T. – During General Price’s 1864 campaign in Missouri John enlisted joining General Shelby’s command and participated in all the battles in which the command was engaged during that campaign, and in one of these had a horse shot from under him. He surrendered at Ft. Smith, Arkansas.

Applegate, Lewis M. – Major. He led what is known as “Applegate’s Raid” at the beginning of the war, and before he had joined General Price with his command. He was a Major on General Price’s staff; the exposures of the war seriously impaired his health.

 

Arrington, A. F. – He served under General Cooper and Stonewall Jackson, he was wounded during the Battle of the Wilderness.

Balthis, William Henry – Captain Co. A 21st Virginia Calvary. He first enlisted with the Warren County; Va. Rifles, as a drummer, April 18, 1861. The 21st Va. Cav. was organized in August 1862 and took an active part in the various battles in East Tennessee, western Virginia, and the Shenandoah Valley. He commanded this unit the close of the war. He surrendered his unit at Winchester, Va. April 26, 1865. After the war he came to Missouri in 1866 and settled in Brunswick, Missouri. He worked on the Brunswicker, paper, and in 1878 he came to Huntsville and established the Vindicator.

Carter, Samuel J. – He joined the Confederate army under General Price, under whom he served two years, participating in the battles of Boonville, Lexington and Dry Wood. In the fall of 1863 he joined General Robert E. Lee’s artillery service and continued in it until the final surrender. Under Lee he was in the battles of the Wilderness, Spottsylvania Court House, Second Cold Harbor, and Petersburg. First Richmond Howitzer Battery.

 

Case, James – Pvt. Conscript. Captured at Brunswick, Mo., Oct 20 1864. Forwarded from Springfield, Mo. To St. Louis Nov 21, 1864, then to Rock Island, Illinois November 24, 1864. Died at Rock Island Barracks, Illinois December 26, 1864 of Typhoid Fever. Grave #1716.

 

Cash, Lee – Joined Price’s army in 1864, but became with smallpox soon afterwards and confined in the hospital for seventy-four days.

 

Cash, Jasper Newton – In 1864 he joined Price’s Army but also like his brother Lee became sick with smallpox and after his recovery did not join the army.

Chrane, Harold J. – He went with his brother Peter Chrane during Price’s Raid of 1864 and in the last months of the war on a southern battlefield was thought to be died by his brother. Peter wrote to Harold’s wife telling her of Harold’s death. He survived the near death and made his why back home to Chariton County returning to a surprising family in 1865.

 

Chrane, Peter – A new recruit during Price’s Raid of 1864 endured hardships in the last months of the war with his son and brother.

 

Chrane, son of Peter – He went with his father during Price’s Raid of 1864, he endured the hardships of war and on a southern battlefield was killed, his father carried him a short distance and he died. Peter buried his son at the battlefield.

 

Churchill, William – Pvt. M.S.G., Captured at the Battle of Blackwater River, Milford, Missouri, December 19, 1861, was sent to the Alton, Illinois Prison.

 

Clarkson, Robert P. – During the war he enlisted in the CSA Army and served throughout the war, taking part in the Battles of Pea Ridge Arkansas, Lexington Missouri, Corinth Mississippi, Port Gibson, Black River, Vicksburg, New Market, and others. He was transferred from the Army of Mississippi to the Army of Northern Virginia under General Lee. He was wounded four times and at one time was shot in the left lung and left for dead. For 32 days he was unable to speak, but finally recovered and returned to Chariton County. Buried Corinth Cemetery 1926.

            He attended the annual reunion of the Ex-Confederate Association of Missouri held at Moberly 1881. He served with Co. H, 1st Mo., and Bowen’s Brig. He gave Keytesville as his home address.

 

Cloyd, Gilbert M. – He died at Keytesville during the war, having been taken prisoner while in the Confederate army, being sick at the time of his capture.

Cook and was captured and sent to Gratiot Street Prison in St. Louis and transferred to Alton, Illinois. He was released after his father died. He is buried at Beulah Cemetery. Sons of Confederate place a stone at his grave.

Eagen, James A – Co. F 3rd Mo. Infantry. James saw action at Drywood and Lexington as a member of Co. C 5th Reg. 3rd Div. Missouri State Guard. Enlisted by Captain Lowry in CSA in Greene Co. on January 25, 1862 at the age 19. He was in all action from Elkhorn through the Atlanta campaign where he lost a foot at Allatoona, Ga. October 5, 1864. He was retired on disability Feb 17, 1865 and took the oath at St. Louis, Mo. On May 25, 1865. James died in 1899 and is buried in the Keytesville City Cemetery.

Grinstead, Dr. J. J. – Surgeon, Third Division Missouri State Guard. General John B. Clark mentions Dr. Grinstead in several field reports as serving the wounded well after several battles in Northern Arkansas and at the battle near Carthage, Mo. July 5, 1861. He later practiced medicine in Keytesville.

 

Grizzel, Thomas M. Jr. – Pvt. Co. D 5th Ky. Infantry, Ashby’s Cavalry. Thomas enlisted at Holston, Va. April 20, 1862. He enlisted Ashby’s as his unit at the KC reunion. He attended the Kansas City reunion in 1891 and listed Salisbury as his home. He died 1913 and buried in the Clifton Hill cemetery.

 

Guerin, M. – M. D. physician and surgeon after the war. In 1861 with the M.S.G. he became a member of Carey’s Company in the 2nd regiment. After the expiration of that term of service he became orderly sergeant of Company K, 2nd Missouri regiment, C.S.A. He participated in all battles in this State and in the South, except during the time of his imprisonment. At the Kenesaw Mountain he was wounded no less than five times and was taken prisoner. For ten months he was confined at Camp Douglas.

Hazelwood, Jas. L - 3 Lt. M.S.G., Captured at the Battle of Blackwater River, Milford, Missouri, December 19, 1861, was sent to Alton, Illinois Prison.

He was very active in raising volunteers for the State or Confederate service. In the spring of 1861 he was commissioned adjutant general of General Clark’s division of the Missouri State Guard, and served the battles of Wilson’s Creek, Dry Wood and Lexington. At the meeting of the State Legislature in Neosho in October 1861, he was the first man nominated for the Confederate congress from Missouri; he continued to represent this district until the final evacuation of Richmond by Lee. During his absence from Missouri his property in Brunswick was all destroyed. He returned to Brunswick in 1867 and returned to his Law practice serving his community and state.

Hyde, J. B. – Presiding judge of the county court. In 1861 he enlisted in the Missouri State Guard under Governor Jackson. Again he enlisted in Co. K, 2nd Reg. Missouri Infantry, as an orderly sergeant. On June 27, 1864, he was captured and held prisoner until February 1865. He was confined for a time at Louisville, them at Nashville, and finally at Fort Douglas, from which he was exchanged. His engagements were Fort Scott, Lexington, Pea Ridge, First Corinth, Iuka, Second Corinth, Grand Gulf, and Vicksburg.

J. B. Hyde attended the Ex-Confederate Association of Missouri reunion held at Moberly, Mo. 1881. Served in the 2nd Mo. Cockrell’s Brig. Co. K. Dalton address.

Jackson, Jim – A very active bushwhacker throughout the War in Chariton County. Hunted by the Union Authorities after the War. Captain Jim Jackson and William Stephens were permitted to surrender to Captain H. N. cook at Camp Switzler at the Fair Grounds near Columbia, on taking the amnesty oath, giving up their horses and arms. Captain Jackson and 14 of his men surrendered on June 1865. It was reported in the Columbia newspaper the Missouri Stateman Jackson was killed June 23, 1865.

Jones, Taylor – Pvt. Captain Clark’s Co. D Gordon’s 5th MO Calvary. He enlisted November 1, 1862. Served until taken Prisoner of War at Hot Springs, Arkansas on April 19, 1864. He was forced to enlist in the Union Army. After the War he returned to Chariton County and Married Mary Moxley.

Leonard, John – Citizen. Murdered by the Union Putnam County MSM 1864. He was seventeen years old; it was claimed that he was a guide for a squad of bushwhackers. He was arrested by militia soldiers stationed at Brunswick and taken to the Grand River. Having broken the winter ice they thrust the boy under by force and killed him.
